The Rolex SailGP Championship scoring system is simple; points are awarded for races and events, which are added up to determine the three boat line-up of the winner-takes-all Season Grand Final.

Each event stages five fleet races before the three-boat Final determines the event champion.

Season 4 // Switzerland and Spain close racing in Halifax

The event leaderboard keeps track of the points teams have scored throughout the event, with the three highest ranked teams after all five fleet races qualifying for The Final.

Points are awarded to each team based on their finishing position in each of the five fleet races:

Position Points
1st 10
2nd 9
3rd 8
4th 7
5th 6
6th 5
7th 4
8th 3
9th 2
10th 1
11th 0
12th 0

The points won in all five fleet races are added together. This means that if the same team won all five fleet races, it would finish fleet racing with 50 points.

Scoring in the Championship

The winner of an event Final is declared event champion and awarded 10 points in the Championship leaderboard. Second and third place are awarded nine and eight points respectively.

Season 4 // Emirates GBR close racing with ROCKWOOL DEN in Halifax

The rest of the fleet, which did not qualify for the Final, are awarded points relating to their overall event ranking; fourth place is awarded seven points, fifth place is awarded six points and so on. The teams which finish 11th and 12th however receive zero points.

Season 4 // Close call between Switzerland and New Zealand in Christchurch

The Championship leaderboard is recalculated after each event, with the three highest ranked teams at the end of the season qualifying for the Grand Final. The winner of the Grand Final is crowned Season Champion.

Season 4 // France aggressive start in Bermuda

Event and season ties

In the event of a tie between two or more boats in the event or Championship leaderboard, the teams are ranked according to their finishing places in the most recent race or event.
