Los Gallos driver Diego Botín has heaped praise on his team after back-to-back Grands Prix victories - and put their impressive run of form down to solid teamwork.
The Spanish outfit have been a model of consistency in 2026, having featured in every Final so far this season with the exception of Perth which they missed due to boat damage.
After converting the reliability into success in Halifax with their first win of the season, they doubled down in Portsmouth defeating NorthStar, Explora Swiss and Artemis in a thrilling Solent showdown.
Botín put the win down to the dynamic among his team, especially their ability to bounce back from bad starts using speed and tactics.
“I just think we’re working well as a team lately - we’re sailing the boat well,” Botín said. “It’s super tight, the fleet is super strong, but we’re managing to sail the boat very well with very few mistakes.
“It felt like we were gelling as a team in every aspect, and it felt very, very nice around the course. We didn't do super nice starts, but with the recovery we could make it.”
Crucially, Los Gallos’ victory narrows the gap to 2026 Season leaders the Bonds Flying Roos to 12 points - still a challenge, but, with five events still to go, one the Spanish will relish.
“It was an amazing weekend with the conditions we had, very windy, with a small wing, which we love,” Botín added. “It was amazing to get the win back-to-back after Halifax.
“This Final was a bit more on the edge than the last one because we didn’t have a very good start, but we’ve felt good in these conditions all weekend.”
SailGP now heads to to the Baltic Sea resort of Sassnitz for the ninth outing of the 2026 Season - and Botín says his team’s plan will remain largely unchanged.
“Nothing is for granted in this league so we need to keep working the same way if we want to give ourselves the same chance again,” he said. “The approach for Sassnitz will be to keep doing what we’re doing now.”
